The Storytellers

I'm excited to be working on a new franchise called, "The Storytellers". These are in-depth stories that allow us to go beyond the headlines. There is so much going on in our society, in our world -- I believe that we need to have public discourse. I also believe that people care about what's happening, even if it doesn't directly affect their life.

For three months, I followed the story of a woman named Tracy. She and her husband were making ends meet, one paycheck at a time. That is, until her husband died and she could no longer pay the rent. Tracy found herself out on the street, with her 12 year old son, Hans. For weeks they were sleeping behind a dumpster outside a Target store.

After her story aired, my voice mail box filled up. People called to say thanks for telling this story. They wanted to know more about Tracy and her son. And, it got people talking about the larger, societal issue: How many families in our community, in our country, are homeless? It's staggering. As a society, I think we should care. Because, as the saying goes, we are all just living paycheck to paycheck.

You can click on the link to see Tracy's story, or other in-depth stories we've done in recent weeks.

These are the stories I am looking forward to telling every Wednesday and Friday night. My goal is to get more people talking.

I'm not sure if you are who I need to talk to-but here goes.Sometimes just making the community aware of someone in need brings out the best.My son and his fiance have just had triplets(9-29).They were told there were 2 until about a week ago, when they were told there were 3 babies. All are healthy as well as Mom.Both families have been helping out as much as we can. The problem is they have a small compact car. With their 22 m,onth old daughter plus the triplets, they do not have enough room for all the babies in their car. Is there ever an instance where someone would help them in this situation? They are getting some help from the state because my son has not been able to work for the past few weeks due to having to take care of the 22 month old while Mom has been in the hospital.
If we had the money or resources we would get them a car,but we are on a fixed income also. I work but am having health issues cropping up,and my husband is disabled.
If you can't give me any insight I understand. My phone # is 520-868-0864,
home e-mail is blues52@peoplepc.com,
work e-mail is dbooth@pinalcountyfcu.com. Thank You,

Hello Carey,
I heard your story this morning about the woman who has had 40 foster children. Approximately 2.5 years ago, my sister, who could not have children of her own, decided to adopt a child. She found out that if you go through the foster care system it was easier to adopt. She proceeded and got her foster care license. Within days she had several children in her care and as a family we were involved in order to help and we were introduced to the foster care system.
If you want to do an investigative report, you need to inspect the foster care system and see how disturbing it is. I can assure you, the children are not the priority. Although anyone working for the system will tell you they are doing a good job and that the system works, but being in it and seeing things first hand, it is one of the worst systems in our country and it really needs some intervention to make sure that the welfare of the children are the first and only priority!
Along with the son that she did adopt, for the last 2 years my sister has had 4 other children, all siblings from the same mother. My sister first got the oldest boy who was 2 years old and the 1 year old girl with Down's Syndrome. A few months later, the next child, another little girl, was brought to her, who at that time was just born, and 1 year ago, she got the 4th child, another little boy. Every 9-10 months this mother has another child. The children all have either a mental, physical or behavioral problems.
Now raising the 4 children of a mother who doesn't care, plus the 1 son she adopted, she has 5 children and the oldest is 4 yrs. The mother, who still is very young and probably still having children somewhere, has had no punishment or reprimand and has no financial obligation to these children. The courts actually have tried to reunite these children with her on more than 1 occasionan and she has no interest in them. She doesn't even show up to court.
This is such a tragic problem in America and we need to speak out for these children, since they really have no voice!!!
Please help me in helping them. Investigate the system and help give these children the rights, compassion, and love that they deserve. It is not their fault they were born into misery!
I have told my sister from the beginning of all this that I was going to do whatever I could to help change the system and I have made numerous phone calls, even to the Governor's office and I feel like I have gotten the runaround. I am willing to help and crusade in anyway I can.
Please consider this quest and let's help these children, afterall, they are our future!!!
Thank you for your time,
Christine Deaton

i just wanted to commend you on the story for shelter dogs and bringing the publics attention to the help that is needed for them . its a very sad fact that they have only 72 hours for adoption and there seems to be very few people to help them now. i have many ideas on how to get them out of the shelter even temporarily so the genera pubic can see what great pets they even if someone can give them a chanceat
a new life.
