My boys are in elementary school so they still think it's cool for mom to hang out with them. I'm a homeroom mom in each of their classrooms and it has been very entertaining.

The other day my second-grader's teacher had me type some narratives the kids wrote. The question posed to them was, "When you grow up, would you rather be a teacher or a Principal, and why?"

The answers were so amusing! One little boy said he wanted to be a teacher because "they didn't do as much work," and "get to have more fun." His teacher got a good laugh out of that one.

Obviously, that little guy has a lot to learn. In fact, I've been very surprised at how heavy the work load is for teachers these days. And there's no doubt, the pay definitely doesn't match the workload. Not only are they grading papers, developing lesson plans, and a ton of other stuff required by the school district; they are surrogate parents too.

Teachers spend 7-8 hours a day with our children which, in many cases, is more time than we spend with them.

So if you want to spend more time with your child and help out an underfunded part of our community, you might want to consider volunteering just an hour a week at school. But you might want to do it while its still "cool" for mom and dad to show up at school!
