Lucky in Sin City...not what you think!
By Heather Moore
I am sooooo lucky!!
On my way home from southern California last weekend (where my kids and I watched a nail-biter of a football game, as my USC Trojans barely got by ASU) my plane from Burbank to Phoenix was delayed....as usual.
So much so, that my guy and I decided to hop a plane to Vegas for the night...cool!
We finally get up to our room at the Mandalay Bay about 11pm for a quick change before we head out. That's when I realized our spontaneous adventure had come to a crashing halt....
I left my purse in one of thousands of cabs rolling up and down the streets of Sin City.
No cell phone, credit cards...camera...makeup!...and more importantly, no ID to get home the next morning! Big mistake...Ouch!
My first thought, was not to panic. Focusing on the fact that this world is filled with more good people than bad...I hoped for the best. We called every cab company in the city, went back to the airport's lost and found, and had hotel security check their surveillance tapes to find out specifically which cab we were in when we got dropped off. (Yep, they can do that!)
With all bases covered until things re-opened in the morning...we played at the tables a bit, had a drink, and it wasn't until 3:30 in the morning while we're eating dinner, (yes, dinner!) that we get a call from a mysterious stranger with an English accent, who says he's got 'my bag' about 10 miles outside the city....whoa!
Turns out, 'Andrew' was a passenger in the cab after us, and figured my purse was safer with him than the actual cabbie....He saw where I worked and called the station's assignment desk...but all they could do was call my cell phone....which was inside my purse!
Fortunately, Andrew saw repeated attempts by me to call my cell, using my boyfriend's phone...so he, in turn, called that number and got us.
With caution, we drove out to a gorgeous multi-million dollar neighborhood called Spanish Trails....through two security gates....where two well-dressed Brits met us in front of an incredible home and returned 'the bag.' Every last silly little thing was inside.
(Our cabbie swears one of the guys that met us was Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols...)
Finally, we made it to bed at 5:30am for a 3-hour nap, before catching our plane to come home...and go to work. (Yep, I was a little worse for wear Monday night, if you noticed.)
Sin City proved to be, 'not so much'....and yes, I know how incredibly lucky I am.
I was literally euphoric for two days....just an awesome feeling to know there are a lot of solid people out there who will do the right thing...just have to have a little faith and trust...and a lot of prayers! (they work!)
FYI: When you lose your ID in Vegas and need to board a plane, there's a police sub-station above ticketing where you have to get special papers, then they'll walk you through a special line....so don't despair!
