Guys... How in the world do you do that?
By Kim Martinez
Alright guys, I want to know the secret. I'm speaking specifically to men. The world could be blowing up around you and you seem to have this uncanny ability to phase it all out, and I mean everything, any time you want. My curiousity and envy of this ability started years ago.
Alright guys, I want to know the secret. I'm speaking specifically to men. The world could be blowing up around you and you seem to have this uncanny ability to phase it all out, and I mean everything, any time you want. My curiousity and envy of this ability started years ago.
I was sitting passenger in a guy friend's truck. I observed him staring off into space as he drove in silence. I wanted to see how long he could space off like that and drive quietly like I wasn't sitting inches away from him. It was making me crazy! After 10 minutes I cracked asking the total girl question... "What are you thinking?"
His response... "nothing."
My response... "How can you think nothing. That's not even possible."
His response... " Seriously, nothing."
My resonse... "For 10 minutes??"
His response... "Yep."
I had that silly conversation years ago and it remember like it was yesterday. Since then I've asked several guys, is it possible for you to just space off with nothing in your head? Every one of them has said yes! I completely can't relate with that! My head never shuts off. Any given minute I've had a handful of stressful thoughts:
"I didn't take those jeans out of the washer. They're mildewing right now. That's going to smell good when I get home. Now I have to do the same load twice. Oh no I don't have enough laundry soap to do another load. Now I have to stop at walgreens on my way home. Well since I have to stop I might as well pick up some blush. Maybe the makeup will be on sale. If it is I'll walk out of there with a bunch of stuff I don't need. I really wish I didn't have to get more soap."
It's exhausing! It's goes on and on and on inside my head. Inside every woman's head. We can't just shut it off and go into that brain rest zone you guys can. But believe me we'd reeeeally like to, so if you can just host a seminar or create an infomercial... we'd all love to know... How in the world do you do that?!

Kim,
Thanks for posting this topic on my birthday! I think it's simply that men and women are wired differently, whether it be gentically, physically, chemically, or some combination. For better or worse, we have the ability to shut off the world when we want to. Analogous to your thoughts, I can't figure out why women don't seem to do that. Any thoughts?

There is NO WAY my mind would be blank if Kim Martinez was sitting next to me, only inches away, in my truck.
I'm like you Kim, my mind never shuts off and I can't believe it when people say their not thinking of anything.

I agree with Kelly's comment if Kim Martinez from Channel 3 was inches away from me my mind would be far from blank. I would be worried about looking like or acting like a tool, but I know what you're talking about. It's not that we're not thinking about nothing it's just what we're thinking about is not worth mentioning. I mean we have real problems but as men we find a solution, decide our course of action, and act and then we never think about it again. Most of the time we pondering who would win in a fight Superman or Batman, but we all know that Superman would kick the ish outta Batman. See even now as I type this I'm pondering which Superhero arse I could kick or if I was Anakin Skywalker would I choose the light or dark side. So you see it's not that our minds are blank it's just full of nonsense and you really don't want to be in a guy's head.

Kim,
I agree with "D" above. We too as men think constantly about numerous things. When we say nothing it can be a thought that is truly not worth mentioning, or perhaps something we wish not to share as it is personal. I know my thinking never ends, and sometimes keeps me up at night. And most of the time when someone asks me what I am thinking about, I tend to use the "nothing" answer quite often.
Well Kim that is my two cents. Keep up on the blogging. I just found these and will keep watching for new ones. And great job on your reporting.
Take care,
Chuck
