El Niño finally arriving?
By Royal Norman
The rain and snow which came to Arizona on Friday the 19th could be a sign the expected El Niño weather is about to return to Arizona.
For months, we've been talking about long range data which indicates we'll have wetter and warmer than normal conditions from late January through March. That would be a good thing for a whole bunch of reasons.
First and foremost, we're still right smack dab in the middle of what could be a 30-drought. Any precipitation is welcome for the most part.
Secondly, there are a lot of businesses in the High Country which depend on decent snows. Without the snow, a whole lot of people sit at home without work.
One interesting note: We always complain (me, too) when our weather models fail to help us forecast the weather correctly, i.e., we get it wrong.
But we don't talk about successes that much. For the rain and snow that fell in Arizona Friday, the models basically nailed the storm in terms of precipitation. Yes, it started a bit early, but other than that, there are a bunch of computer weather programmers out there that should be proud.
