Inmate Idols... Rock Stars in Stripes

It's the one story I get asked about most, singing cons at Sheriff Joe's Tent City... so here are the high notes. The con-testants sang everything from soulful ballads, to hip hop, one guy belted out a Garth Brooks country classic.

Well, they may be in low places, behind bars wearing pink socks and hand cuffs, but at Tent City they're rockstars in stripes. Let me tell ya, it was one captive audience!

Besides bragging rights, the finalists say the con-test builds self-esteem and comradery among inmates.

Judges included Sheriff Arpaio himself, an Elvis impersonator, and rock legend Alice Cooper, who compares America's so called 'Toughest Sheriff' to Idol's Simon Cowell.

In the end, Corey Brothers took the crown as the first ever Inmate Idol... spelled "Idle" as in idle behind bars.
He sang Temptation's hit song "My Girl."

When asked how it felt to win, Corey held up his certificate and said "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day, but look I got some sunshine out of it."

While Corey didn't win a record contract- just yet... he did win junk food like pizza and Big Macs for his cell clock buddies.

In Hollywood, there is even talk that Dick Clark Productions could make Inmate Idle a nationwide television talent show.
