Our dirty little secret.

By

They don't call it "the world's oldest profession" for nothing. Prostitution is a problem that touches every community on the planet. Whether anyone acknowledges it or not.

And while society has very little sympathy for women who "choose" that lifestyle, there is one problem in particular that is not just the realm of third world countries. Child prostitution is a reality on the streets of the valley. I saw the proof with my own eyes Monday night during a ride-along with Phoenix police. What I saw shocked and saddened me. But, that was nothing compared to what I heard... from a 15 year old girl picked up for prostitution that night. She agreed to share her story with me. Hitting the streets as a runaway at age 13. She'd been in state custody since age 9 after she says her father became abusive. From there, it wasn't long before a pimp picked her up and put her to work. Two years later our paths crossed, and she wanted other people (kids in particular) to know what it's like out there. It's a gripping tale of hopelessness and despair that sadly has little chance of a happy ending. There is some hope though, legislation is under consideration that could help girls like this. It would provide stiffer sentences for pimps and johns who prey on underage girls. But recently the bill died in the house judicial committee (it passed in the senate) so, supporters are trying to get it tacked onto another bill. It is a long shot, particularly this legislative session, but it has a chance with enough popular support among voters. Phoenix city council member Peggy Bilsten is one person trying to pressure lawmakers to pass this bill, and I can say firsthand, she could use some help.
If you need further proof, stay tuned to 3tv at ten o'clock on Wednesday night (5/23), you can hear "Latoya's" story for herself and make your own decision.
