Confessions of an ambulance chaser--South of the Border

By Mike Watkiss

The image of a trout on a ten-speed come to mind as I embark on my first blogging adventure. I 've got to confess I am one of those old-schoolers who has always believed that the best writing is done on a soggy cocktail napkin. This whole computer thing is sort of a stretch for me.

That said....we begin by looking back.....a trip to Hermosillo Mexico last week. Our mission: to interview Eduardo Bours, the Governor of the Mexican state of Sonora. I first met Bours in Febuary when we traveled to Mexico City with delegation of Arizona leaders headed-up by Governor Napolitano. It is clear that Bours and Napolitano have become both friends and allies as they deal with border, trade and immigration issues in their two neighboring states.
When we took the short flight to Hermosillo last week we wanted to talk to Bours about the recent eruption of blood shed and murder in his state.....violence that most believe is the result of warring drug cartels battling over market share and smuggling corridors. Of course all news is local so we wanted to find out what all that meant for Arizonans who live near the border or travel to and from Sonora. Bottomline most of the violence thus far seems to have been between drug thugs and crooked cops. Bours seems to be taking an aggressive stand....sending in state police....after drug hitmen rolled thru the small town of Cananea and murdered five local cops. So are tourists safe?....Let's just say they don't seem to be the targets. More to come....mw
