Now what?

I am at a loss for words. I can't believe it and I don't want to believe it. How can it be that Jimmy Cox is gone? This is a nightmare. I know Jimmy wouldn't want us to be sad. He would want us to move on and remember him as the fun, loving guy that he was.

Blame it on Mike Watkiss

Yes, it's Mike Watkiss' fault. I blame him and only him. It's because of him that I have not written a blog in a couple of months.

In the Midst of Chaos, I Found a Hidden Treasure

I'm tired. Really tired. Exhausted, actually. The last couple of weeks have been really interesting to say the least. It all started on March 13, when yours truly along with my nieces, Gannel and Cindy, flew to New York City to see Mana in concert at Madison Square Garden (FYI: Mana is a popular rock band from Mexico). We arrived in New Jersey, got on the train that would take us to Penn Station, so far, so good.

I'm in Denial

Yes. I am. I am in denial. I never imagined it would come to this--OK, actually, I did. I knew it was a matter of time. I knew that sooner or later the news would be confirmed. I knew it! I just didn't want to believe it. I chose to pretend it was a rumor, a bad rumor. But it's not a rumor and I must now face reality. I'm telling you folks, this is the end of an era.

After spending the last four years at 3tv, I am sad to announce that one of my absolute favorite people in the world is leaving. He is one of the funniest guys I've ever met; he's a talented reporter, a great friend and all around cool person! I am sad to say that my good friend Antwan Lewis is leaving us! He's moving to Chicago to report for WGN News. There's no doubt in my mind that Antwan will be fantastic at his new job and it puts him closer to a true love him and I share...NEW YORK CITY!

Over the years we've shared a lot of great times! Some of my favorite include a trip we took to Flagstaff where we spent time with good pals Javier Soto and photographer Nolan Tornquist and his lovely wife, Kim. We had so much fun! Then there was my birthday party last year! That was sooo much fun! Then there's all the funny times we've spent at work! After all, if our viewers only knew what it's like behind the scenes and what it takes to put tv on the air!! And believe me folks, Antwan certainly makes it interesting!

I am going to miss him a lot! So please help me congratulate Antwan on his new job!!!! Write and tell me your favorite Antwan moment so that I can send your comments to him before he leaves. I am sure he will greatly appreaciate your thoughts!

Antwan, you know I love ya! You are my big brother, always there for a good laugh, a good hug and good times! Thank you for being such a good friend to me!

I wish you lots of luck! Say 'HI' to Oprah! And after Chicago, I'm sure we'll see you at the Network!

Con mucho cariƱo tu amiga,

Claudia Rivero

AMBER ALERTS

You probably heard about the Amber Alert issued last Friday after a six-year-old girl was kidnapped from her home in the town of Maricopa in the outskirts of Phoenix. In any child abduction, time is ALWAYS of the essence because according to law enforcement experts, children who are taken by a stranger are usually harmed or killed within the first three hours. Time was certainly of the essence in Friday's Amber Alert...the suspect...a convicted sex offender.

There's No Place Like New York

It's 1:08 a.m. and I should really be asleep considering that I have to be at work at 9 a.m.. However, I looked at my calendar and realized that it's my turn to write a blog. The question is: what could I write about that would make our azfamily.com visitors want to read? Well, I will share with you the details about my recent trip to NYC. I went with my nieces, Vanessa and Gannel, it was their first time in the Big Apple and they loved it! It was also an important trip being that we were there for the fifth anniversary of 9/11 which I had the opportunity to cover for Good Morning Arizona and Good Evening Arizona. It was a time to reflect and remember the thousands of innocent men and women who died in the attacks. I really wanted my nieces to see Ground Zero and for them to learn more about this sad chapter in our nation's history; I believe they did. Vanessa said she felt a knot in her throat the moment she saw the photographs placed on a portion of the chain-link fence that surrounds Ground Zero. They are photographs that were taken the day of the attacks and are now part of a temporary memorial. Gannel was stunned by the size of Ground Zero; she feels television simply doesn't do it justice.

I was there about a week after the attacks happened and was incredibly shocked and heartbroken when I saw the massive devastation up close. Nothing can prepare you for something like that and it was, without a doubt, an experience that forever changed my life. I have been back to NYC several times since then but on this particular trip it was very difficult to see that five years later, Ground Zero remains this giant hole in the center of Lower Manhattan (I believe the site is about 16 acres in size). How can it be that five years after the attacks the thousands of families still don't have a place to go where they can mourn their loved ones? Although there are many makeshift memorials, some of the victims' families I spoke with told me it's not the same. Hopefully those involved in the planning for what will be the new World Trade Center and the Freedom Tower will soon put their differences aside so the construction can finally begin. What did my nieces take away from this experience? That we should never, ever forget what happened on 9/11/01.

The girls and I did get to see many other parts of New York during our visit. After all, there is no place like the Big Apple! It's a city I've visited countless times and one that I fall deeper in love with during every single visit! It's the people, the food, the energy! Who says New Yorkers are mean? There is no doubt that every single time I visit New York, I always have a reason to return. ALWAYS! This time is no exception!

All my love,
Con MUCHO amor,

Claudia Rivero
