The mists of Avalon... or in this case my cup

By Catherine, azfamily.com Staff

Y'all know how unbearably hot it's been. I know, I know. "This is Phoenix, lady. Quite yer whinin'!"

I know this Phoenix. I grew up here. I remember the summer it (unofficially) hit 126. Been there, got the T-shirt. (I really do have one somewhere.)

But it's supposed to be winding down about now. Plus it's been more humid than usual, especially for the temps we're seeing.

It's so hot and humid my water cup started misting the other day. Not just condensation. Actual swirling mist was coming off the cup. It was tres bizarre. I've never in all of my nearly 34 years seen anything like it ... not off a cup any way.

I had just turned off the oven. (I know, I know. I deserve to sweat for using the oven when I know darn well how hot it is.) The poor little chiller at my apartment complex was doing the best it could to cool things down. The chiller tries, but the thermostat never really makes it below 80. Ick.

But I digress. I poured water from the fridge into a room-temperature plastic cup and voila, mist. I don't know what else to call it. It totally looked like somebody had dropped dry ice in water -- except it was swirling off the cup.

Now you'd expect that opening the freezer in a hot room, but off a cup?!

My cat and I were mesmerized. Doesn't take much.

Oh, look... something shiny!
