We now interrupt this Greek cruise...
By Catherine, azfamily.com Staff
...to better ourselves and help the hungry.
I know I've been writing about my Greek cruise -- just an excuse to show off my pictures, really.
But I found the funnest (is that a word?) site today and wanted to share.
It's called FreeRice.com.
Basically it's a word game. Most people have not tried to bone up on their vocabulary since they took the SATs. This is evidenced the myriad of misused words I routinely run into. (Said the woman who wrote "funnest." My mother, the English teacher, would choke. More accurately, she'd choke me.)
Where was I? Ah, yes. Misused words.
Here's an example. In reference to a "Producer's Picks" section, one person said the content was chosen at the "producer's digression."
Now, I'll be the first to admit that I digress -- a lot (see above) -- but I'm pretty sure the word here should have been "discretion."
Then there was a conversation about a technical glitch, and things to avoid so as not to "exasperate the problem." Don't you just hate exasperated problems? We can't have that! Exasperated people are fine, but not exasperated problems! I believe the word for which the person was looking was "exacerbate."
I won't even get into the person who insisted that asleep was spelled "uhsleep." And yes, she was serious. (Eye roll.)
So if you're into 25-cent words, FreeRice.com is a fun little site. You're given a word and four meanings. For every one you get right, 10 grains of rice is donated.
I know what you're thinking.
Who pays for the donated rice? Advertisers. And according to the site, it's distributed by the United Nations World Food Program
It's a win-win. Free (and entertaining) vocabulary lessons for everyone and free rice for the hungry.
It's like a word-a-day calendar, but funner (there she goes again) and with an altruistic (ha!) spin.
Give it a FreeRice.com click and let me know what you think. How many grains of rice did you donate? I'm up to about 800. (Don't tell my boss.)

What a fantastic idea and effort. Great chance for those of us who consider ourselves wordsmiths to use our talents for something greater than doing well at office parties.
