When Chris Pischke died in 2006, the future of his popular Old Town restaurant was uncertain. But longtime pal Robert McGrath bought the place, keeping the staff, the menu and the funky beach-cantina decor intact in honor of the man who made "No Sniveling" a local catch-phrase. Regulars who loved the center-stage bar, the laid-back atmosphere and the straightforward food were delighted that nothing much would change. Nowadays, Pischke fans, who still show up for enormous breakfasts, burgers and hearty sandwiches, rub shoulders with McGrath fans who can't resist their James Beard Award-winning hero's sophisticated spin on cowboy food. The McGrath-imprinted dinner menu features beef short ribs with Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce, crabmeat-stuffed catfish with lemon beurre blanc and blackened beef tenderloin with green chile-blue cheese sauce. And because McGrath will be opening REM (his new-fashioned American-Continental concept on Lincoln Drive) later this year, he's trying out his recipes on lucky guinea pigs who show up for his three and four-course tasting menus on Friday and Saturday nights. As you can imagine, Pischke's is as lively as ever — now that Scottsdale's iconic cowboy has merged his energy with Scottsdale's iconic beach bum. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. $-$$$
