With its exposed brick, illuminated fashion runway and massive, high-def projection screen, Canal is Old Town's trendy restaurant du jour, appealing to the well-dressed 20-somethings who show up in droves. Both the great terrace (overlooking the canal) and Chef Justin Beckett's eclectic American menu are the main draws for boomers, who drop in for business lunches and early(ish) dinners, before Canal becomes a certifiable scene later in the evening. Salad selections, which include the Canal Chop and the grilled asparagus, are especially good, as are inspired desserts, which change with the seasons. For appetizers and entrees, don't miss the black pepper seared ahi (an appetizer served with fingerling potatoes and port berry sauce), the roasted Muscovy duck breast with seasonal berry gastrique or the braised and grilled beef short ribs, served with smashed potatoes. Lunch and dinner daily. $-$$$
