She Blinded me with Science
By Scott Davis
I never saw this one coming. Looking for ghosts... using science? Heck, I was just looking for ghosts using the Internet!
So as you know, Hallowe'en is coming. That means big things to me and my family. Not that I'm the Devil's spawn or anything, but All Hallow's Eve is pretty much a sacred holiday in the Davis house. And for the last five years or so, I've tried to honor the tradition on TV.
Must have been two weeks ago I was online searching for local groups that go Ghost Hunting. That's always good for a feature story on October 31. At the awesome resource www.meetup.com I found several new groups to add to my list, and sent emails to gauge interest in allowing me to tag along on an upcoming outing.
Christy Necaise with ICPIR was the most enthusiastic responder. She and her cohort Dee were planning an "investigation" at Goldfield Ghost Town out in the desert past Apache Junction. She gladly invited me along, without knowing whether I'd show up as a skeptic to make fun or as a full-on believer ready to jump to any ghostly conclusion. I think of myself as somewhere in between, but that's a story in another blog.
Anyhow folks, the investigation took place last night and I was happily impressed with the equipment they had out there: infrared cameras, EMF (electromagnetic frequency) detectors, DVRs (digital voice recorders). But you see, it wasn't just the equipment, because I've been on ghost hunts with that stuff before. These guys have printed rules and protocol for conduct on one of their events!
I won't bore you with the minutiae but we did get what might be some VERY interesting video. It took place in an upstairs room with three of us present. Two of them had their DVRs and flashlights, and I with the videocamera.
Investigator Drea asked if there was a spirit in the room, for it to touch his right arm. About 30 seconds later he asked Dee to feel both of his arms for a temperature difference. She agreed the right arm was cooler than the left and then exclaimed, "Can you see that? Look at the goosebumps!" The hairs on his arm lifted up and there were indeed tiny bumps covering his entire arm. A few minutes later Dee exclaimed again that she'd just seen a shadow cross the hallway in front of us. No one else was there.
Ghost activity? Who knows. I didn't see anything. I didn't feel anything. I didn't hear anything. Good thing we had plenty of cameras rolling... can't wait to review the video!
You'll be able to see the best bits on Hallowe'en night. Happy Haunting!
